Tell us about your survivor journey.
June 2015 almost a year to the day that I lost my husband and son’s father I found d lump in my armpit while shaving in the shower. At 35 – I had no risk factors for breast cancer but decided to follow-up with my PCP just to be safe. After a mammogram and ultra sound were negative, the biopsy came back as Stage 3 Triple Negative Breast Cancer. I was in shock! I quickly assembled my care team to keep me alive and provide a parent to my young son, who at the time was 3 years old. I completed 16 rounds of infusion chemo, 25 rounds or radiation, a double mastectomy with lymph removal, reconstruction (with no nipples) and 8 rounds of oral chemo. This was completed while working full time so I could maintain my insurance and still provide a home for myself and young son. I am healthy today and am so happy I was able to connect with your amazing staff at the YSC Summit in Austin, TX over the weekend. I am interested in any opportunity that can provide motivation to anyone facing life trauma. I appreciate your time!!
What has been the biggest source of support through your journey?
My SON- Caleb!
What are some lessons you have learned throughout your survivor journey?
The physical body can endure many things- it is the mental body that must also be considered since the amount of positive self-talk that I have to do on a consistent basis is imperative to me moving through life as a widow, single mom and cancer THRIVER.
