Tell us about your survivor journey.
February 9, 2017 almost cancelled my mammogram for the 4th year. I had no knowledge at age 69 in great health…no medications and no surgeries since age 16. Just general colds.
Invasive Ductal Carcinoma In Situ, Elston Grade 11/111, ER/PR +, Her-2 neg.
My family doctor referred me to a local doctor. But I looked thru internet and found Pearlie Harris Cancer Center in Greenville, SC near me. They helped me find surgeon, Dr. Towler.
Best thing I did was switch doctors. Started with two deep spots at 1 o’clock and 12 o’clock on mammogram in February 2017 and Dr. Towler found third spot forming at 3 o’clock during surgery in April 2019.
With surgery and radiation I am now a survivor. Joined the group Pink Warriors Angels of TX (my daughters group) and no longer have my head in the sand. My 2nd year mammogram is February 2019.
What has been the biggest source of support through your journey?
Pink Warrior Angel’s of TX, Copperas Cove, Texas
What are some lessons you have learned throughout your survivor journey?
I had it easy this time. But never assume cancer free.
Do you have any advice for a newly diagnosed survivor? What would that advice be and why?
Talk with a local Cancer Center let them know your concerns and what you know. Then ask them for group supporters to contact based on you. Join a group. Always remember everyone’s cancer is different. Treatments and results for you may be different for me even if called by same name.
In the space below, feel free to add any additional information like extra stories, lessons to live by, meaningful life quotes, advice or unique factors that contribute to your survivor journey.
I was a year survivor before I joined a support group. I went thru it with only my 74/yr old husband and a friend would have been good. So don’t wait…we are here for you from day 1 to lean on.
