Tell us about your survivor journey
The thing that gave me a passion and a purpose I didn’t have before happened on May 23, 2010 when I was told I had invasive ductal breast cancer. It’s the most common form of breast cancer and I was 36 years old with no family history or palpable abnormalities. I was working in a radiology clinic at the time as was able to have a free mammogram. I did it for no other reason than because it was free and I like free things! I noticed that other women my age were calling in to schedule a baseline mammogram and I thought it would be a good idea if I did too. I thought I would be too cool for school to have these images to compare when I was 40 and started annual screenings (which was the standard at that time).

This mammogram was against the advice of my primary care physician at the time who had a concern about radiation exposure from the imaging. I never expected my first mammogram to result in a breast cancer diagnosis, but I am so glad it did. I knew a part of my life’s journey would be to not only educate others on the importance of early detection but support others on their journeys as well. I mistakenly thought that you would need to have a family history to get breast cancer and knowing that others had that same thought, I was encouraged by my medical team to share my story. I’ve been able to do that many times to local groups and on social media.

I have survived and can be a survivor too. And people ask me, well, when do you survive? When are you determined to survive the day that you’re diagnosed with breast cancer? That’s the beginning of your survival survivor.
